I 've found my downshifting to be directionally proportional to my up shifting........[8D]
Sorry, I had to get that one out of my system.
Seriously, I try to use my brakes for slowing and downshift after reaching my new slower speed.
Like Joe said, brake padsare cheaper than clutches and as well as the aforementioned brake light to signal those behind me of my slowing down.
Brakes - cheap...Engine & transmission - not cheap...I use the brakes for slowing & at the same time I am downshifting, just not using the engine to slow the bike...but prepared to accelerate if need be...
I downshift as much as I upshift. So does everyone here. Plus I use both brakes, my boots and my parachute sized jacket. I haven't dropped anchor yet though.
Why does EVERYONE HAVE to put this choice in a poll:
"Who gives a sh*t! "
Leave it out... then if someone dont' give a sh*t, they won't respond to the poll.

I don't downshift much for braking, but I definitely downshift for torque and handling. Revving the engine a bit higher makes all the difference in the world when the road's twisty.
