Just read an article where the last 5+ earthquake in the midwest was around 1968 and before that it was 1890 something. So yeah, it's a big deal here. I bet California doesn't get tornadoes, do they? Those aren't a huge deal here, but you guys would freak out. That's how it works.
Anyway, I got home from work at 3:30am (we had something big going on last night) and I woke up around 4:30 with my house shaking like a ****. Stuff was rattling like crazy and it was freaky.
Cal gets tarnadys, but we dont call em that. We call em Microbursts. Lotsa wind, sounds like a 747 landing in your back yard, neighbors car gets parked on your roof, stuff like that. Thats ok, I needed a new roof anyway
I live up in the Joliet, Shorewood, Plainfield area which is south of Chicago and a half hour from Indiana. I didn't notice anything, but I was wondering how far north people felt it. I have friends in Carbondale and they felt it. Long as the scoots aren't hurt no big deal. Just kidding I hope no one had property damage. I saw some awnings on roofs fell at some homes.

We get tornadoes regularly down here, and some folks still pretty much freak out.[8D]Can't blame anybody for that though, considering the damage they do in the blink of an eye. At least they're small-ish, and they do create construction work. The folks in Kansas, Oklahoma, and such really have it tough with the twisters. As for earthquakes, I've only felt a small tremor once while living in the L.A. area. Strange feeling, for sure.

The thing about tornadoes is that they almost always happen at night when you can't see what's going on! That's the scary part to me.

Microbursts cause a lot of damage but they aren't the same thing as a tornado. If you experience both, you'll know the difference. I hope you never do though. A microburst is a downward flow of air from a storm and then moves outward as it hits the ground sort of like water if you poured it from a pitcher on a table. They are very localized and don't typically move around. A tornado is a vortex with air and debris rotating and the GD things move and can go anywhere destroying everything in their path. They sound like a 2 mile long freight train headed straight for your living room.
We all have our potential natural disasters. I've never felt an earthquake but have way more experience with hurricanes and tornados than I care to.
