1983 FXDG
Hello I'm new to riding and my bike. I bought it last year and it has a leak in the transmission at the drain plug. some one (not me thankfully) stripped the plug and fitted an oversized self tapper, they stripped it as well. it is in the hole and is tight but has a severe leak. I was told the only way to fix is to strip the bike down and weld the hole shut, drill and tap another hole. Is there any other way? If not should I change to a 6 in 4 or 5 in 4 cased transmission at the same time. I would like to know if i need to change the tranny should i just buy a complete bolt on or replace the guts, would this ruin any resale value the bike has? Thanks for your help and patienta with this new " bike bumb" ( as the wife calls me)
If she calls you a bike bum at least she still loves yea. You could do a couple of things Back in 83 we just put a pie pan under the bike and let it go, it wasn't a Harley if it didn't have oil under it. next if you replace parts you'll find out that they are not going to match and then you'll be leaking oil again from a different place. Over the years I have found that Harley's problems are guys that wrench and they don't know what they are doing, Take it to a dealer that has some old school guys and see what they say. in the mean time buy a pie pan. and keep the 83 you got a good and never to be remade again bike.
