I'm originally from the East Coast (NH), but am now stationed in Minot, ND (hence my screen name). My Mother recently moved to FL, and my Wife and I are looking into going down to visit her, with our 3 year old daughter.
I was wondering, what is the best time of year to visit, are there a lot of "good" bike shops down there, what are the good places for families to visit, good places for the Wife and I to visit, etc?
Sorry this doesn't have much to do with bikes, just putting this out there for the Floridians in the Dyna family...
for the kid... busch gardens(may not be old enough to really enjoy it), lowry park zoo, MOSI, florida aquarium.
for the bike.... nothing too exciting, but you could check out thunder bay on hillsborough. pretty cool shop. usually some nice bikes to check out. and , there is a harley dealer on dale mabry.
you and the wife can have a good time in ybor city(bars and several cigar shops that roll their own) or channelside. wanna spend some $$ on the little lady? go to international plaza. you also may one to check out one of our 40 gentleman's clubs. most are full nude and allow full contact.
time of year... i say march or april, or october november(remember that is hurricane season.) summers hot as hell and dec to march can get chilly(50's-60's) which means no beach.
If you do Tampa in Feb...You can take ride over to Daytona forBikeweek.About a 3 hour ride and the weather is usually good. Sometimescan be a little rainy in Feb....
About two to three hours to Daytona where you can check out J and P Cycles showroom and Bruce Rossmeyers Harley dealership. Both are huge showrooms. The place is just north of Daytona on I 95. As far as when is the right time to visit, don't wait another day to go or it will be hot as hell! If you can't make it soon, then wait until October through April. Temps are comfortable, but you may catch a hurricane in Oct/Nov. Take the little one to Disney. She would probably like the Magic Kingdom or Animal Adventure. Do it in Oct/Nov and you may beat the crowds. There is always Sea World located in Orlando. She would probably like that as well. Not too many people going to Sea World, so you don't have to be as careful about the time of the year when you go.
Stay the hell away from June through August. May and September can also be uncomfortable. The heat is only half of it. The humidity is unbearable. Sweat will literally POUR off your body.
I travel to work in the central FL area monthly and have to deal with it for the $$$.
I sure wouldn't subject myself to it for pleasure.
Definately chack out Ybor City. I was there recently for work, and stayed in Ybor. Very cool place. Lots of tattoo shops, bars and cigar shops. Not a place for the young one, but you and your wife would enjoy it. Plenty of bikes down there every night, plus a Coyote Ugly bar. I had a great time there.
UH60Hwkdrvr- Yup, it is the reason! -55 degrees F,ambient, in January will REALLY wake your *** up! Then, in August it gets to 100 degrees F, or OVER, and the sun doesn't go down until 11pm!!! Almost like living on Mars, man!
