Default WTF?! Stage1??

This is driving mef'n crazy... So heres there reason im so confused. I just got my bike not long ago with se intake and v&h big shots, my dealer then says your going to need a "performance calibration" otherwise know as 150bucks ish,... fine makes sence... still not totally convinced that i got what i paid for i called some other dealers around the province... they say with v&h you need the fuel pak that a "calibration" wont cut it!!?!? I see others here say you need something for the ECU to balance out the fuel going in too lean??? SERT ordifferent ECU mapping... some members here report a part# for the ECU change... i dont have that... then the dealer(the one i just called.. not the one that sold me the bike)tells me that HD stopped allowing map changes in 08... but then directly tells me that i need it ifi just get a SE intake.... [:@][&:][:@]FFS!!! someone , anyone please try and clear this up for me... heres the dealers phone number if you want a good laugh... and listen to them talk ****... 403.250.3141

I do appologize for my cussing... but im just so confused atm.

Enviros,

Take the time and read all 35 pages of this thread. If nothing else, you should be able to make an informed decision. IMO XIED is the way to go.

Good Luck!

Oh man... 35 pages?! lol i cant imagine this adding to my confusion.

So, i just talked to yet another dealer, and he confirmed that with v&h the ECU mapwont cut it, then proceeded to try and sell me on the SE race tuner for a mere 700 bux CAN... lol yes ill take one of everything cause my pockets are deep... and no, that isnt the word sucker printed across my forehead [:@]how can an ECU map not work with these pipes... but yet a 700 dollar tuner can?!?!

I agree, it's alot to read, but worth it. They call them Stealers for a very good reason, it's worth a little research to sort out the BS.The basic problem is that stock 07/08 Harleys are programmed to run way too lean (and therefore HOT) in order to meet EPA standards. By adding pipes and AC mods you just make the bike run even leaner, hence the need to somehow change the AFR settings in the ECU.

The Stage 1 download is said to increase the rev limiter, adjust the VE tables, but still leaves your AFR too lean in orderto meet EPA standards. I suspect that the dealer has different canned maps that are tuned to a given exhaust/AC configuration. What the stealer should have said that HD doesn't have a map tuned to your configuration.

The SE race tuner or SERT allows you to completely customize the ECU for open and closed loop operation, unfortunately you really have to know what you're doing, and it take a lot of (expensive) DYNO time to get things just right. There are other options that piggy-back the ECU to fool it into running richer but by far the most cost effective is the Xied from Nightrider. At least skim Cruiser's thread (m_2836828) and visit nightrider.com to see what he has to say before you pay way too much for a solution that you really won't benefit from.

Before I read that thread I didn't know nuthin 'bout none of this.

Well personally I have an 06,and bought the SERT right from day one.I also used V&H Big Shots with a doherty power pacc air cleaner.
I recently read an article in American Iron magazine of a build-up on an 08 road king I believe(Not sure of the model)
They said that the ECM and air sensors on the 08 will adjust to a pipe and ac change with no problem.I wished the system on my 06 would do that also.

As soon as I figure what the hell you guys just said I'll have some questions of my own. Waiting on VH shortshots staggered black and SE stage 1 AC. Gotta read through this thread again and check out the Xied. Hadn't heard of that one. I was looking at PC, Fuelpakd, and SERT. I don't like the price of the SERT but I really don't want to add anymore stuff under my seat. It's crowded in there as it is. What can't anything ever be simple?

Ride Safe.
