After reading all the posts about everybody that has switched even posted ? about cables myself it has to be one of the best mods I could have done so far.Talk about comfortable being 6ft tall with stock bars get 15 to 20 min in and myshoulders got soar, fingers went numb, and just wasn't that happy riding on trips over 1hr.Rides totally different now just need to win the lottery so I can quit my job and ride all the time. Working on forwards and different seat now. Just can't believe the difference! Keep givin all the good advice and ride safe.

MINI APES
I really liked the Low Rider in the showroom, but I felt a pull in my upper arms as I reached for the stock handlebars. I insisted on having the mini apes right off the bat to allow for slight elbow flexion and arm comfort. I ended up finding a used one that already had it.
I'm only 5'7" and I also have the forward controls... I'm sure you'll love that one, too... it's so much easier on the legs.
Awesome, aren't they? I jacked mine up a few inches with some 4 inch risers and will replace the whole setup later this summer with 15 inchers and short risers. Same height, but a different look. I like the apes because you get so much variation in the location of the grips just by rotating them a few degrees in the risers. I have had drags in the past on a different bike, and liked them for a bar hopper, but they put all my weight on my arms. Kinda like leaning into a wall all afternoon. I hope you got a good deal on them; all these guys with su-wheat Carlinis and other fat bars have to be doing something with their take-offs. Now you can do an internal wire job on them. Good news is there is a great link that will walk you right through it.
you know when i got the Bob it was going to be the first thing i changed, but you know i am three months in now, have changed a whole lot of stuff but the mini apes are still there and i just cant bring myself to change them, they are just too great to ride with. I am interested in flat track bars and there is a guy here who runs the Flanders wide H5's but its looking more like i am going to stick with the apes - pete

I had the stock 10" mini apes, then some flatter bars with risers and now, well 16" Gorilla 1 1/4" bars with stock 06 bob riser (1 1/2"). There is a thread that thebestofindica titled "my ape install". This has got to be one of the best if not the best how to on this site for installing apes I have come across. has pics and explains things very well. I will have my bars back from powder coater this weekend but parts not until Mon or Tues. so install will be next weekend.
My bars were free, but for cables (throttle, idle and clutch), "ebony" brake line and ends and wiring extension cost to my door is $225.00 (just about 20.00 in shipping costs or so). Powder coating about 100.00.
As far as how high, I think it is just what makes you feel good (I am referencing the bar hight, Ha Ha ).
I replaced my mini apes on my Wide Glide with 12" Chubby's andran the wires internal with SS braided throttle and clutch lines, a GREAT improvement both in comfort and look.
Just curious, I know many states have laws about the height of your bars, i.e. hands cannot be higher than shoulders... Anyone ever get stopped for that with the taller apes? I went with the 12" so as to avoid the issue, but it turns out they are the most comfortable I have had.
