Default HELP! Oil issue

What constitutes an over filled Oil Resrve on a HD 2006 Dyna?

I just had my 1000 mil service at the dealer. I changed out the oil for synth and when I picked up the bike I went on an immediate 500 mile ride. ( having just had the biked serviced I ddi not do my own check and I will never make that mistake again) After returning and before riding again I checked the oil and noticed the oil level was registering on the dip stick almost all the way to the top. Over the do not overfill lettering. I did not ride but after I got back from a short trip this weekend I took a short ride to check the hot level and noticed when I returned an unusual almost plastic burning smell I had noticed after the long ride when I finally got the bike back in the garage in an enclosed space. I did not notice the smell in the open air. I was not concerned after the first ride as I thought it might simply be the bike having been ridden for so long.

Can anyone tell me if this is my problem and how should I handle my dealer if they screwed up my service and damaged my new bike?

Also, the manual is not clear on this but when cheking the oil level do you screw the oil cap back on then unsrew it and remove to check the level or just stick the cap back with out srewing it down and with draw to check the level?

Thanks, I plan to confront the dealer today after I hear back if this is a problem. I am concerned about seals and the airfilter system.

Default RE: HELP! Oil issue

Generally overfilling the oil will not do much if any damage other than the mess it causes on the bike. The synthetic oils have a little different smell when exposed to say an exhaust system and burnt than the dino oils do. I would recheck the oil according to the manual warmed up and speak to the dealer. You want to get a record of sorts from the dealer stating that it was overfilled in some way in case anything shows up later due to being overfilled (if it was). If need be bring it in for a service check stating that you want it checked over because it was overfilled. This way it would be recorded as such on the service ticket, if you go this route, just make sure they record it as such when you leave the bike.
