Default Gas Mileage

Just wondering, I went on a road trip this weekend and it was approx. 170 miles and I got 49 miles a gallon. Is that good or bad. In town I get around 37 to 38 miles a gallon.

49 sounds great, I wish mine was there, I get 34-40 and am very happy with that for 2up riding.

That sounds good to me.&nbsp\\; On the topic of MPG, I want to pass along some info I read here recently.&nbsp\\; In my commute, I usually stay between 65-70 mph.&nbsp\\; My bike seems to do OK in 6th gear at 70, but lately I stay in 5th unless I'm continuously over 70.&nbsp\\; On my last tank I picked up nearly 5 MPG! I thought I was getting good mileage by keeping the revs down, but apparently I was lugging the motor and making it work harder. Your conditions may vary, but it's something to look into.

redbeard, just curious do you have a tach? I would be willing to bet you are running in the 2500-3000 RPM range around 65-70, which from my experience is ideal on my 05. After about 3500 is when it seems to drop a little on long trips. 70 is right at 3000 on mine.

I did 300 this weekend and got about 45 combined street and highway. I'll try your suggestion of 5th and see if mileage improves at all on the highways, freeways will still be 6th since in the desert you have to do 80+ just to not get run over by a cager

Redbeard, I learned the same thing. Keep it in 5th till youre over 70, then go to 6th. Big difference in economy. But then, why should I care. I dont ride for fuel economy

Wish I got 49 mpg. But I dont and dont care anymore. I do run 70 mph at 3000 rpm on highway or above so could be better if I slowed down, but wont................

Thanks for the input guys. I ride approx. 30 mles round trip a day to work. I ride at 65-70 but I use 6th. gear after 60 - 65. I will try the 5th. gear to see how it works.
