I have 16" gorilla bars on and to be honest, I have had little to no problems, but there is a trick that I had to do. I put the bars on and ran 150 miles, and dam my arms were tired and I was somewhat beat. Now I have a somewhat bad back (past injury) and so holding myself up to the wind blast just kills my arms. So what I have is the following: I have a memphis shades shield on for long rides and a Mustang seat with a drive back rest. Went on a 150 mile ride the other day and really had no problems. So to answer your question, think of it this way. I am 6'0" tall and have wide shoulders so the wind blast without a shield and my arms just below my shoulders makes me like a huge sail and you feel like you have to really hold on to keep from being blown off. So with a shield this problem is reduced alot, and then for my bad back I use the back rest which makes it even better if you ask me cause I can sit comfortably on the bike and just ride.
others may have a different idea on this, this is just what I have found. Good luck with what you choose. PS around town, no shield, works great.

I had 16's on my dyna loved it for a couple hundred mile ride, but any more that I felt like a kite. I didn't really want to go the windshield route so I just went to drag bars, but I guarantee if you do what Stanger did it'll make a big difference. So basically if you go on 4 to 5 hundred mile rides maybe do the 12's or set it up like Stanger.

I got them on my RK and love them. The thing is it really depends on you. How tall you are, where you sit, do you lean back, sit forward? I have actually seen custom shops and actually some HD dealers that have a mock up bike for seats and bars. You may try that. Long trips will kick your *** if they're not comfortable. Try to find someone that already has them and see how it feels. As far as cops go, I know in my state they repealed the height law a few years back. Check your state law. If it's illegal and a cop really wants to stop you, he will.

I went with 16" apes and wanted more so I added 4" risers. I'm 5'10" and with stock risers I could ride all day. With the 4" risers I feel much cooler but I do start to feel like a kite after a few hundred miles especially at 85mph+. As far as cops go I've only had one incident. I New Mexico State Trooper pulled me over and looked through his law book for over 45 minutes telling me he "remembers seeing something about that" before finding the law was repealed in 2000. Then he started asking me to explain a 14' turn radius. What an @ss!

I'm 6.1" and I tell ya that I've felt like a kite w/my stock buckhorns on windy days. I think w/apes I'll sit up-right a bit more.
