Default Headlight wiring

Just a curiosity question. Why do some headlights have 2 wires and some three? A friend just ordered a new light for his bike. The new light has 2 wires. The one on his bike has 3. Is it going to work?

Yes, it will work. The original third wire is a ground. The new light will ground itself through the metal where it gets attached... Hope this helps.

funny you should ask this question now. I just finished wiring my new headlight about an hour ago. it was two wire. The factory had white, yellow and black wires. black is ground, obviously.
my new headlight had red and yellow wires. I took out my stock headlight and stuck the new headlight wires into the socket. I assumed the new one grounded through the body, so I didn't mess with the black wire.
turned out on mine, yellow on the new went to white on the old, and red on the new went to yellow on the old.

Yeah, if you try to match wire colors, you will have reverse low/high beam.
