I did a front end change on my 05 FXD. Which caused me to do away with my stock speedo. I have a new electronic speedo and tried to wire it up, but my bike would run like crap. So I have a elected to install an aftermarket speedo sending unit that can mount by the rear wheel. Who has done this? Which did you purchase or wish you had purchased? Where is the best place to order? Any hints needed.
I installed a Diamond Digital (Dakota clone) electronic speedo on my 06 FXDI.
I mounted my speed sensor on my swingarm and positioned it so it would pick-up on the rotation of the rotor mounting bolts. I did it this way based on what someone else did to make his work. He drilled a hole in the swingarm to mount his. I didn't want to do it that way and have a permanent scar from the install, so I mounted mine differently. I have rear axle covers and used the lower mounting bolt from the cover to secure my sensor. Here are a couple pictures. Sorry they are not real clear.
The Diamond Digital speedo came with the speed sensor I used. It is just a universal unit, similar to what you can get through Dakota or other manufacturers.
