My springs are on but turning it which way does what?

The lowest setting is the deepest of the pattern...which in turn will be the softest.

Visa versa, the shallowest will be the stiffest. I put mine on the shallowest because I'm at 240 and I like the stiffer ride.

Just think of what will compress the spring and give the most.

I've heard you need a lift to put the side plates on...I'm not sure about detachable though. I have the permanent and I'm about to undertake that here soon. I know there's a way to notch out the perm mount so I don't need a lift. I'm sure a lift will make it 100x easier!!

your spring stay the same size only the preload(initial stiffness settings)
are adjusted... to make the shocks seem firmer turn them clockwise...counterclockwise to provide less preload...
if you experience harshness on large bumps you are bottoming the shock and need to increase the preload...the shocks come from the factory on the lowest(softest) setting.

+1 on the preload.
You can put the bike on a lift so you can remove the top shock mounts so the rear drops enough to get the original fender support bolt out. It's just a clearance thing to make them easier to install.
