personally i feel that if you paint it to match your paint it blends in... other tha n that you can get a smaller battery and re locate it... getting rid of it completely... but oyu have a nest of wires behind it, just to warn you
I have the HD chrome half cover. it has a curved line to it, and looks much better then the lunchboxes that come stock.

I agree, when they are color matched, or in some cases, chromed, they don't look out of place at all. One of the reasons I stayed with the vivid black on my FXDC is because it's the only one that the boxes on both sides match. They put black boxes on all of them and they do stand out, a bit too much in my opinion, when the bike is a different color and those things are basic black. I've seen 1 or 2 guys here replace them with chrome ones and then transfer the decorative bands over to them and they look really slick to me.
