As we were riding yesterday the passenger backrest failed and came loose! Luckily we were turning a corner and were at low speed. I have the adjustable passenger pegs on with the floorboards and they are the only reason my wife didnt go off the back. Upon looking at it after calming her down the rubber gromets that the front part of the backrest go into had broke and allowed the backrest to rotate back. CHECK YOUR MOUNTING POINTS ON A REGULAR BASIS IF THEY ARE DRY GET NEW ONES!!!!
We were lucky and I would hate for one of you to have a worse outcome. I am fabricating braces that go from the backrest to the removable tour pak mounting points so this cannot happen again.
Reminds me of an incident in when I was 16 and I gave a girl a ride. She swore she had ridden on a bike before. The bike did not have a sissy bar so I stressed the importance of hanging on to either me or the fender struts. It was a short trip through a small town. Speeding up slowly from a stop she did not hang and and hit the ground running at 5-7 miles an hour. She stayed on her feet and no physical harm done to the passenger. The bike however needed 2 new rear signals. Thankfully after the initial surprise we both had a good laugh about it and she got back on.
Hope your wife recovers from the scare quickly and I will definitely add that to my checklist.
I'm glad your wife wasn't injured! Is it or was it the removeable back rest like on my fatbob? I agree with one of the above post. Can you post pics of the area or part that failed?
Thanks in advance,
Tim
