Default Exhaust for FXDC HELP

OK here's the problem the Army trust me to work on Millions of dollars worth of helicopters. But I have no idea how an exhaust system works. I feel like a tard. I recently ordered my 09 FXDC (first real Harley for me) I wont get the bike till I return from Iraq first wek of December. So I have been looking at all the mods and upgrades like forward controls and exhaust. I don't like the look of the stock pipes on the 09 FXDC but I realize thats it is not always about looks. I want something that looks nice, sounds nice, and performs well. Can anyone help me understand how an exhaust system works in laymans terms. And maybe point me in the right direction to make a sound decision in choosing a god quality exhaust system. Thanks Yall

Here's a good article on how Harley exhausts work:

http://www.harley-performance.com/harley-exhaust.html

A Harley-Davidson is a 4 stroke, internal combustion engine and the principle behind the exhaust system's operations is basically the same as any 4 stroke, internal combustion engine.

If you're looking for good exhausts for your FXDC, you can check out Vance & Hines at http://www.vanceandhines.com

Default Thunderheader vote here

As far as the exhaust goes I like Thunderheader's, I looked at the V&H's and i still like the matte black thunderheaders with the chrome heat shields. I have a 08 FXDC (from AAFES) as well and i picked it up in July and did the 103 kit, Dyno, fwd controls, and installed the thunderheader exhaust and all said and done my numbers are 101 HP and 106 Torque. Plus all is covered under warranty minus the exhaust cause Harley won't cover non Screaming Eagle stuff.

First off, thank you for your service and protecting our country.
I have the screamin eagle street performance pipes, if your looking for a
great sound but not loud pipe these are good, sound great when you get on it.
but at idle not loud at all. they are just a little louder than stock.
I was happy with them at first, but of course now I want something louder.
friends have vance and hines, they are louder and sound good also. but not
the same tone the as screamin eagles. just my opinion.
be safe over there and get home and enjoy the new ride.

I went with Cobra pipes, because every one else has vans and hinds, I wanted something different, they sound similar to the vans & hinds, but to me a little deeper when turning 2500+rpm

You can find plenty of exhaust systems that look and sound to your taste. And we all have different tastes. But if you plan on going with a full exhaust instead of just swapping out the mufflers on the stock pipes, you should probably look into going full stage 1 which would include also changing out the air cleaner (easy job) and some sort of fuel management/tuning.

The only reliable way to get the right exhaust for you is to look and listen. There are a lot of great looking pipes that might be too loud or not loud enough for you and it's difficult to tell just by listening to sound clips on a computer. That's better than nothing and buying on looks alone though. I'd suggest taking delivery of the bike, as-is, ride it around during the break-in period and look and listen to other exhausts. Find an event to go to where lots of bikes will be. Don't be afraid to ask someone what they are running. Most of us are quick to brag on our own stuff and share information.

I went through 2 sets of slipons in a year before I settled on my pipes. I bought on price and looks and didn't take a lot of time to listen first. I got lucky, though, and in both cases sold my slipons for more than I paid for them.

Good point 2007fxdc, the more air your moving out the more you need in. IMO fedwa001, get home (SAFELY!) and enjoy your new ride! Go to some of your local bike nights and events, hear some of the diffrent choices out there, then make your decision. Also, make sure what your hearing is a 96" vs. an 88". Some exhausts sound totally diffrent on these two engines.
