after taking the bike into the shop, we found that the blk/wht (ign 12+) wire was shorted to ground somewhere. after checking every other component, we unplugged the ignition controller and the short went away. it had a crane fireball in it. I am still thinking they need to pin check the plugs to find out if that was the root of the problem, or just another casualty of a shorted wire. (that and to prevent f-ing up the new one). I think I need to wash the damn thing in holy water, or something when I get it back.....

I tried a gremlin bell but it broke too!!
