I got 15% off retail for the kit and was quoted 3hrs labor. I can live with it.

The 06 is totally different in design from the 05 and earlier models. I bought my kit from Surdyke Harley and saved about 20% from MSRP and then had my local dealer do the install it took three hours at 60 Bucks an hour for labor.

I have installed forward controls on my '04 FXD and removed them to be installed on my new '06 FXDCI, the only thing is that I had to buy the '06 shifteer rod for about $140 or so.

Good to know that 05> will fit the new bikes. Forward controls were very easy to install on the 04.

I purchased the kit from H-D and the shifter arm which attaches to the tranny is longer and has a slight bend in it, if you don't replace this I am unsure if you might expierence some binding or interference, otherwise why would they include it, I opted for the dealer to install and maintain my warrenty, a total of 600.00.
I installed my forward controls without replacing the shifter arm. I have only done about 150 miles since the install but haven't had any problems.

Is it JUST the H-D Forward Control Kit that requires all this extra effort? What about Custom Chrome, Kury and other kits for the '06?

<edit>
I just received this email from Kury Tech Support:

"The only reason I think Harley-Davidson wants you to remove the pri
cover is to take out the mid shifter. In our kit you just put a chrome
cap over it."

Can anyone here confirm?

THANKS!

I bought the HD '06 kit but instaled it like the '05 kit. I took the old foot shifter arm slide it back as far as it would go, leaving it flush with the outside of the primary, and kinda wedged it behind one of the bolts coming out of the crank case. Then I just hooked up the new linkage to the old arm coming out of the trans. to the new foot arm. I do have a new trans. arm that came with the kit and someday I'll take the primary off and put it on. This isn't the proper way to install the HD forward controls but it works and it only took about 3 beers to complete the job (about 1.5 hrs.). As far as tools, buy as many as you can afford, you can never have to many. A set of Torx sockets are good to have as well as a torque wrench. I'm also a big fan of the allen head sockets. You will need a open end wrench for the break control install. Oh yea, go but some loctite you need the blue and the antisieze.
Good luck let me know if you have anymore questions and I'll try to help. I have learned alot from this forum and I'm happy to share.

So then, from what I can gather from you and Kury (see my post above), in reality it is NOT necessary to tear into this thing in order to mount forward controls. Hmmmmm...

My guess is the MoCo is assuming that most people arn't going to take off the primary and will have to bring it in and pay to have it done. It's a good idea on their part, I was about to take my bike in before I got help in the forum.
