Hey everyone, new to the forum, so bear with me. I just bought a 02 Wide Glide, about two weeks ago. Been riding everyday I can, and I of course, being a gearhead I can't leave anything alone. I plan on making a few changes to the bike, one in particular, is to change the bars from those "ape-hanger" bars to the street-slammer bars or a slimar type.
The issue is I'm being told this change will make the bike seem very "heavy" at low speeds, according to the local HD dealer. ANY INPUT?
ALso, when I bought the bike it already had a stage 1 air kit on it. I changed the exhaust by adding a set of slip-on turn outs. I've noticed now the bike "sneezes" sometimes. I heard that is a problem with the CV carb, but the stage one carb jet should have prevented that. At the advice of the HD dealer here, I took the bike back to them today (sunday) and I should know something by tomorrow. In the meantime, anyone have any ideas about this: bigger jet, bad carb, etc. One thing, I did check for a intake leak, couldn't find one.
You have access to a dealer that is open on Sundays? Wow. Hope this doesn't sound 'off' but you mentioned you're a 'gearhead' but you took the bike back to the dealer. Most gearheads I know do their own maint. If all you're dealing with is a possible jet problem, why not just try adding a larger jet yourself. Check the plugs for rich/lean coloration. Adjust jets as needed.
Ha, Good point. I had been talking with the lead mech there (good friend of mine) about the bike and how I liked it. Anyway, it's free, still falls under the warranty, so I figured why not. If the lead Mech and the shop owner wants to take a look at it, to mkae the deal right, I figured why not.
My money is on lean!!!
Name of the Harley shop is Bobby's Territoral Harley Davidson. And yes it's open 7 days a week.!!

It has to do with the center of gravity, I know on my WG with 12" apes it "feels" much lighter to get up off the jiffy stand than my Sporty ever did, since I had both at the same time it was easy to compare. It's all about leverage. I am very happy with the way my WG feels in the curves and the apes make it much more comfortable for me.
It's all a personal preference, so go with what makes you the most comfortable.
If your sneezing when opening the throttle off the line, look into the needle as your culpret. Raise with 2 #4 washers or look into a Dynojet kit to replace whatever jetting you have in there. If you already have a dynokit installed then raise the needle one position.
I have an 02 wideglide with carb and 83,000mi. I went up one pilot jet size to get rid of the cough or you might try raising the needle one notch. What was happening on mine was that at slight throttle changes at low rpms it is too lean and the accelerator pump doesn't quite deliver enough squirt to keep the engine from being too lean, hence it coughs. If you twist the throttle good it gets enough fuel from the accelerator pump not to cough. if you make the idle circuit a bit richer the engine will have enough fuel not to cough, and by raising the needle you start dumping main fuel sooner. do you notice it does it more on cooler days? if so, you have the same problem I had. I only changed the pilot on mine and it will sometimes do it in cooler weather still but very lightly until it is fullywarmed up then it's fine, so I run just a little enricher till it is--- i like my 50mpg and it runs very clean, very little soot in the exhaust-jack
Thanks Jack,
I guess I'll try that. Picked up the bike tonight, went to dinner then stopped and gassed up, it coughed twice in the parking lot. The guys at the dealer couldn't make it duplicate the problem I had, but the owner did say I need the "cv recall" jet replacement done, although, he even admitted that would have nothing to do with the sneezing. I may live with it until I change my pipes, since I'll have to change the jetting again.
No intake leaks and the plugs look fine, so maybe I try your suggestions.
thanks again
