Im looking at buying a leftover 2007 wide glide model...Let me tell ya where my problem comes in...I have owned now 2 harleys now with in the last month...And cannot seem to find the bike that fits me right..
I started with an 07 v-rod...HUGE MISTAKE!!!!!!...Owned it for 3 weeks traded it in on a leftover 2008 superglide...I drive around a 160-180 miles per day...
The superglide is a beast...Just im very cramped on the bike...And its causing my back alot of problems.....So im at the dealer lastnight...And their it sat...A blue wide glide..loaded tons of crome...looking at me...I threw a leg over the bike...And just sitting on the bike made me want to trade at once...The bike felt like a dream just sitting on it...
But im looking at now...takeing a hit on a 08 superglide...So I dont know if its worth it...Is the wide glide worth it....
How does it do on long hauls.handle, etc etc...I need help on this...This forum has always gave me great information...
You would have to tell how much of a hit. If you put extended forwards on your S/G you will have more room than a W/G the W/G has larger fork front wheel bobbed fender black motor its really up to you and the $
Chef, Dyna is right, there are a lot of factors. I had to put a Sundowner seat and pad on my WG and that made a big difference and Im going to add two inches to the stock forward controls this season. My advise is to rent one for the day. The 150 bucks is money well spent depending on the hit you're going to take.
I agree with what the other members have said. If the only problem with your current bike is that you feel cramped and that it gives you back problems, I am sure that these could be fixed with forward controls and a better seat. But if you are taken by the WG's raked front (36 degrees!), 21 wheel, black/silver engine, chrome, custom tank with flames, etc., then that's another story. I have a 2007 wide glide and I am very happy with it. Before that I had a 2008 FXDC (should be quite similar to your SG; mid pegs, same rake), and in my opinion the FXDC handled a little bit better especially in curves because of its less extreme rake. Not sure if I help here. Definetely rent the bike for a day if you can to get a better taste of living with it. It seems that you have bought a couple of bikes from the guy so he should be able to make you a favor. Also have the stealer run the VIN number of the WG, there were some problems with the handlebars in some early models. My 2 cents.
buy it if it moves you... You will still need to invest $$ into getting it to fit as the current scoot. Kuryakyn 3" extention for fowards is only $189. then there is a seat and possibly new bars. I think the wideglide stock seat felt a little more foward than the superglide seat.
When it came to buying my first harley, I had always loved the wide glides. I've always been happy with my choice. I would see if you can test ride or rent one for the day.
I'd hang on to what ya got and as others have said, new seat.
Possibly a Protac backrest as well.
I bought a protac for my Wifes Softail but I ended up doing something different for her.
They make one specifically for the earlier up to 05 Dyna's, I dont know whats different about them and mine (an 07).
I just flipped the brackets, drilled out the bottoms (whiich is now the top) and mounted it on my Dyna. I even added set screws so it couldnt be stolen easily or shift adjustment.
Perfect place for my bag also since I only ride solo.
I love it! http://www.protac.net/7501.html
...not to mention the stock bars on an FXD are uncomfortable!!!! Get some 6" pullback risers and Buffalo Drags (or a 4" pullback riser with FXDL bars) and you'll be amazed at the diff. You can see the 1st option on my sig pic of my old Sporty...
I changed my Low Rider to this setup and LOVE it!
I don't see a Wide Glide being different enough as far as your riding position to make that big a difference over your super glide. You didn't say if your SG has forward controls or not? Could that have been the difference? Or the handlebar positioning or both? You can replicate most of that stuff on your current bike, especially if you are looking at taking a big hit. You can even put a WG front end on your SG and/or even a bobbed fender. I'm 6'4" and love my FXDC but I have had to add forwards, different bars, and experimented with seats to get the comfort I was looking for.
I have an 02 wide glide with 83,000mi. I went on the Kyle Petty charity ride in 05 and we did 4800 mi in ten days. It is the most all around comfortable bike I've owned. I'm 5'11" and 215 and my seating position is verrrry comfy. I did put on a mustang vintage wide seat to dial it in for my needs-----jack
