Anyone on here gone from Forward to Mid controls???
I bought another inner primry of ebay that appeared to be ready for Mids. On the inner primary the shift shaft hole is blocked. The tunnel is cast into the primary, but there is what appears to be a relatively thin area of cast metal plugging the hole. Do I have the wrong inner primary or am I supposed to drill this out to accept the shift shaft?
You may want to compare the inner you have to an inner with the factory drilled hole for the mids. You will need to make sure the cast tunnel on you inner will provide a proper seal when it meets the outer. I am not familiar with the specific design but believe there is an o-ring which provides the seal between the two.
I did the conversion this summer on my '07 FXDB. Of course, Street Bobs come with mids from the factory, so the hole was there. Looking at the parts manual, I see that Wide Glides and Fat Bobs have different inner primaries depending on whether they're factory-equipped with fwd or mid controls.
For me, I'd get the right part and not risk weakening the casting around your drilled hole. You'd never be able to see if it was cracking, etc.
Oh, the flat, coated metal gasket that goes between the mating shift shaft tubes on the inner and outer primaries is part #63869-06 (for all dynas, at least all '07 and '08 dynas -- I don't know about other years).
-Hope this helped. [And yes, I need to update my sig one of these days.]
