I have some Christmas cash that I'd like to invest into my month-old 09 SB. I'm leaning toward saddlebags, but I'm thinking about the HD security system. I'd appreciate any thoughts on the security system, especially if you don't get a siren. Is it worth the money? Would it really protect the bike?
IMHO, with a motorcycle, if someone wants your bike, it will be gone in a matter of seconds, security or not. Make sure you have theft coverage and get your saddlebags.
I used to work at a dealership where we installed a really cool security system. It is made by Phantom Tracking, both a security system and GPS tracking system. They can pinpoint your bike within 10 feet if it actually does get stolen. Check them out...

Thanks,

My '09 SB came with the HD security system (w/o the siren) when I purchased it. The bike won't start without the fob, but It's NOT gonna keep your ride from being stolen if they haul it onto a truck or van...IMO, just make sure to use the fork lock, and buy the bags instead.
If theives want your bike, they are gonna get it.................
A lot of "If thieves want your bike, they're going to get it" answers... but no one has mentioned that when a thief is looking for a bike, he'll choose the easier target when he has a choice - so, putting a security system might he just one more reason enough for him to grab the bike next to yours instead.
As for the GPS security system - remember GPS needs line of site to the satellites, so, once the bike is inside a truck, van, or building, the GPS is useless. For that reason, I prefer a radio system like LoJack.

I have the digital guard dawg keyless system that completely replaces the ignition. Works great, never need a key again, and if they want to steal the bike they have to first figure out that the stock ignition isn't really hooked up to anything. Is it going to stop someone from loading it up in a truck? No, but few if any things can do that.

Not to be argumentative...
The Phantom GPS system works inside buildings with no problem. It also works just fine in the back of a moving van. We tested both scenarios and were able to see the signal clearly via the rep's laptop tracking software. That test is what "sold" me on the merits of the unit.
Like you said, if someone wants it, they will get it. Your only hope is trying to deter or recover as quickly as possible. The Phantom system also gives you early warning of the theft via GSM/GPRS technology. That means you will get a call/page as soon as something is wrong. Every minute counts, as your bike can be stripped to the frame in the back of that same moving van.
