Im considering switching out my stock handlebars on my 2006 fxdi and adding 12 or 14 inch apes with holes for internal wiring. How high can I go without changing cables? Any suggestions on what bars to get? How do the fat ones look? Thanks.
Yer gonna havta change cables ta use either..Go ahead and upgrade ta stainless braided, I'm sure you will be happy with the look.. I always prefer the look of the fat bars as well..
But all in all, it's whatever you like..It's yer ride, build it the way you want it..
my .02
I built some 12" Ape's for a friend, he ran the electric inside the bars and used all stock wires and cables. The brake line had to be straitend but didn't need to be replaced.
I'm putting stock street bob bars on my FXDC, and I will be using the street bob cables, as my stock ones are not long enough. I think the stock SB mini apes are either 10.5 or 11".
Thanks for the info, Im gonna get the 12 inch and hope for the best
MISTAKE!!!
All the guys telling you that they didn't need to swap cables have steet bobs. I also have a superglide and can tell you from experience that YOU WILL HAVE TO SWAP CABLES! Might as well get the height that you want. If you "settle" on twelves because you think 14's wont fit...well you are gonna be pissed when the 12's wont fit either.

couldn't agree more, cables are not that expensive figure out where you want the bars, and go from there...
I just got 12.5" Wild 1's. They fit great. I did have to get longer cables. I used that as an opportunity to upgrade to the steel braided cables....Chroma-lite. They have a protective coating over the outside so they will never dull. Check out the sig pic.....
