Default Tach

I, too, am taking advantage of the HD trade-in program and trading in my 08 883L for a FXDC. The dealership had one in black, but my personal preference is for a red one. So I had to order it and it will be delivered in early/mid-February. I plan on dressing her with V&H straightshot slip-ons, solo seat, removable rear rack, and engine guard. I am really wondering about getting a tach and how important is it to have one. I read the earlier posts in this forum that it seems for a Dyna, the shift-up should happen at higher mph than what is recommended in the manual. To avoid lug-ins, it seems from the posts that shift-ups should occur at 25 mph for 2nd gear, 35 mph for 3rd, etc which corresponds approximately 3000 rpm at the shifts. A tach would cost $300+ and wonder if it is worth it and just rely on the mph. For those of you who do not have a tach on your lady, do you wish you had one? For those of you who have a tach, do you feel it is that valuable to have? Your thoughts are much appreciated.

Below is a pic of my current beau. She is a beautiful lady decked out in chrome including grips and switch housing not shown in the pic. In the garage, I stare at her, put her on a carpet strip at night and cover her. I gave strict orders to her car companions in the garage not to hit or touch her on the way in or out My wife thinks I am nuts, but me thinks my wife is simply jealous of my lady. I will miss her as we had a lot of fun together. When I give the divorce papers and marry voluptuous Ms Dyna, I hope Sporty finds a nice owner. I worry that she will play the harlot and be passed around from owner to owner who treat her as a ***** who strip and abuse her. Such are my concerns.

I like very much having my tach. For instance 80 mph in 6th gear is just a hair under 3,000 RPM. I would not know that otherwise. I can look my dyno graph and learn where a good shift point is up the rpm scale.
One problem with the Fat Bob set up on the tank though, is that it is TOO low to be seen in the field of view, making it really pretty useless for multiple gear shifting when accelerating, say onto a freeway onramp....of course there is not much shifting that needs done 'afore the bike is moving at go to jail speed.

Man, you do not need a tach unless you *want* it.

On my 006 FXD, I use it all the time.

Mounted right up over the bars,
where I can see it easily.

I think a Tach is a useful tool.It can help you save fuel, get top performance and help tell what gear your in.I got the duel setup on now,but got a Dakota digital to put on this weekend.I don't like the old time look of the duel setup.

I just put my tach on and I really like having it. It is helpful but it mainly confirmed that I had learned when best to shift by feel.

Put Speedway Instruments Micro-Tach on. Not necessary, but nice to have. I was amazed at how low the RPM's are, especially cruising on the highway at 70-80 mph.
