Russ,

Own a '97 Wide Glide and the only thing that comes to mind that seemed to be a "problem" was both (rubber) motor mounts needing to be replaced around 40K miles. I'm not sure if that is normal or not, didn't seem normal to me. Other than that, I haven't had any problems. Main thing is to go over the bike and ask for records of service, maintenance, etc. that was performed on the bike.

If you do purchase the bike, I would suggest draining all of the fluids and putting in new if the records are inadequate. That is what I do with cycles and cars that I purchase.

I have a 99 FXD with about 18k miles. I've had it 3 years and put on 15k of the 18k. Besides upgrades all I have done is regular maintenance.
I've read lots of posts on the mounts, but I haven't had to do mine yet.
I looked at a FXDX. Emerald green, black pipes, it was very nice. I really liked the idea of the dual disc front brakes. The guy wanted way too much and wouldn't take my offer. I found the FXD a few days later and jumped on it. The FXDX guy called the day after that. He wanted to work a deal.

In '99 the FXDX was pretty much a trim option; blacked out engine etc. The FXDX didn't get the adjustable suspension until '00...as well as the 2-piston brakes. That said; if you like the bike and you like the price then you should be happy.....there's also a few other upgrades from 99 to 00, like cam drive pieces, oil pump and a few bits in the trans. I'm going by the '01 parts manual I have for my bike.

Check with a local dealer or indy. I think the early TC88's had an issue with the cams outer bearings and wear, changed out on a recall, might want check with the previous owner concerning this. The bearings would go out then start tearing the motor apart. Not a hard fix but I would have a competent shop do the work. The FXDX is the sport version of the dyna, good bike.

the bike i'm lookin' at has a new engine.

and that's why i want an FXDX...'cause i love my sporty for my commute (55 miles of da twisties ona county blacktop) but the missus doesn't like bein' on the back fer more than 30 minutes...no room

I went from a Sporty to my FXDXT a few years ago for the same reason. As far as being a "sport" version of the Dyna; according to my '01 parts book the "good stuff" was added to the FXDX in 2000 and up model years; the '99 is basically a blacked out dyna by comparison to the later ones with adjustable suspension.....
