I'm sending out my rims for powder and re-lacing and i want to replace the bearings. i have an 02 Dyna Lowrider (FXDL). i've seen in the drag specialties catalog that they have a set for 00-03 FXD. are they interchangeable and is there any other place where i could order those bearings from. I came up short from Dennis Kirk and JP.
i always get them from Harley... think they are like 23 bucks a pop or something... why are you replacing the bearings? did oyu have any flat spots or something? if they look good man stick them back in... how many miles you got on your bike?
i went to harley and they're way more expensive than that. and to be quite honest i figured that they'd be destroyed after the removal. it came down to a better safe than sorry theory. the bike has @ 6500, did you replace yours after you coated them. btw thanks for the powder coating tips as you can see i've been going crazy with it.
If there's nothing wrong with your bearings you are waisting your money by replacing them. Sealed bearings must be pulled out using a special tool to ensure they come out straight and don't damage the hub or bearing. Once out, inspect them for overheating (bluing), corrosion, and/or out-of-round. If they check out, re-use them! Sealed bearings can out last the bike if maintained. With only 6,500 miles on them yours are still brand new.
BTW - They must be removed before powder coating since the cure temps in the oven will damage the plastic casing.
Maybe its just a Missouri and Kansas thing but around here we have "bearing shops". You take the old bearing in, they measure the entire thing, find one that fits your application and you're on your way.
Not the same thing as NAPA, good luck going there.
