Default Lets see your side tag mount!

I'm looking to get me a new side mount tag bracket.... the vertical mount is illegal here in MD, Buddy just got a 250 fine

I wanna keep the side mount just wanna change it to horizontal or maybe a nice curve lay-down mount on the fender....

Let me see pics of yours please, give me some ideas.

Thank you very much!, Donnie

Did they pull him over for something else and then added the $250 for the vertical tag? First I've heard of verticle tags being illegal in Md. I'm in Bel air and usually the shop tells you when you're doing something illegal. They put my verticle tag on no questions asked. btw I have no tag light either...

I hear both ways, it is, it ain't illegal, I called the MD mva and they looked it up in the book and it says the the tag must be mounting in a horizontal position ( Code 13411 )

I'm a Marylander and have had a Road 6 vertical side mount tag for awhile and no issues. Sure I know its illegal (actually when I called MVA they found nothing about it except that the tag must be illuminated and visible so its all in who ya talk to). I've worried many a time locally with Troopers or local cops sitting behind or beside me so I asked the sheriff who's a friend and he said most will not stop you specifically for that as long as its visible and lit at night and if so the only violation for first time only is a fixxit ticket unless of course they're ticketting you for other violations.
As far as I know the vertical side mount is technically illegal in most states so its just a try it and find out thing, you may go for years without issue and never get a fine or only a repair order.

Almost forgot...here's the only shot I have of my side mount shown below. When I got it was something like $19, now they're $24 I think, besides its was cheap, sturdy and already powdercoated. I've made a couple but those either snapped or vibrated really bad with that huge MD tag on it. I've had this one on for about 10-12k miles and no problems. The shot does not show it but I installed light bolts to illum. the tag after the pic was taken
MD now offers the smaller 4x6" tag if you go in and turn in your old tag I think its a $20 fee.

Here's mine. I got it off e-bay and it comes with a LED light in the bracket. Very nice piece and built nice. $50 shipped.

You can make the nice curved really tight fitting ones for the fender with ease. Just some sheetmetal from Lowes and a few rubber stand-off/grommets and some bolts for about $10 and your time to cut, bend and fit it (paint it of course to keep it from rusting). Just be sure to get the smaller tag so that its not so big on the fender. Some of the curved ones you can buy with the plate frame and everything can also made to fit more flush by just changing the mounts out for some thin rubber grommets, just make sure the bolts holding the plate and frame are cut flush and protected from contacting the fender. I made a similar setup and used it for awhile and just used wire grommets between the backing plate and fender as stand-offs and protected the bolts from touching on the frame with some foam gasket tape. I used flat countersunk bolts on the plate side to hold the backing plate to the fender and they were only long enough to just go through the fender so as not to touch the tire under full shock compression.
