No they are not the same. The FXR and FXDX are two different animals...the FXDX is a Dyna Super Glide Sport.

FXR series came first, FXD series replaced it.

I am still struggling to find more information on the 1985 FXRS-SP. I was glued to this history (thanks!) and anxiously awaited any more information about the FXRS-SP. It just sort of pertered out just as it was getting where I wanted it.

From what little I know, for the FXRS-SP the longer suspension was reintroduced and the front brakes were now dual discs. I think the rake is more substantial as well. It would appear that these mods with the Evo motor would be an ideal match, for superior handling wouldn't it?

Where did this article come from? I find it riveting.

My buddy has a '92 FXR and I have an '07 FXD. We have switched. He likes mine better and I found little handling difference but found it had a lot more vibration. I have ripped the road up pretty good with my Dyna (passed him on the inside of a fairly tight sweeper at 100 mph). That popped his eyes I tell ya!
My opinion favours the FXD with its stiffer chasis and front end, but this is strictly an opinion. Now, with all of that, my new forward controls have me in geezer glide handling mode.

I recently came across this website thread e and find it very informative. I asked a similar question on another website b/c I was deciding on whether to buy a '99 CVO FXR3 or a '08 CVO SE Dyna, but the thread kind of changed into more of a pro FXR thread with all the responses. But no comparisons were really made between the two bikes. I was aware of the history of the FXR. In its time was developed to be and considered to be the best handling - riding bike the MoCo made. But with all the new technology and innovations during past 10 or so years, I was thinking that maybe the CVO Dyna might handle equally or better with its inverted forks and newer stiffer frame. I guess the best way to tell would be to test ride each. Anyway, I recently purchased the FXR3 for about half the typical asking price of the CVO SE Dyna. But then I got to thinking, "Would it be too expensive/difficult for the MoCo to assemble/fit the 110" SE twin cam engine onto an FXR frame?" All things equal, it would in theory seem to be a bike with the best of both worlds (in the HD realm, at least). Any opinions or thoughts?

FXR is the best-handling HD ever. I have an '07 FXD that I'm bobbing, and if you stabilize the swingarm (& replace the bushings), it handles really well, but is still pretty heavy.

Pretty tough to compare bikes that could be as much as 28 years apart in age. IMO my 82 FXRS handled better than my 07 FXDB. The Dyna has a better ride, less vibration, more power, and requires less wrenching to keep it running. Head to head the extra power and torque may well mean that the Dyna could outrun the FXRS but that's something like comparing a 2010 Mustang GT to an 82 - technology is way different.

I definitely felt more secure tossing the 82 through the twisties than I do on the Dyna. Some of that may be the mini-apes compared to the buckhorns I had on the shovel, but most of it is the solid feel of the FXRS frame.
