I recommend going with one of the high performance replacement bulbs.

The ballast on HID kits converts from DC to AC, as well as changing voltage. HID stands for high intensity discharge, which gives a far hotter hence whiter light.

I put that Hd light HO bulb and did not notice that much difference, but the sylvanias are alot cheaper than HID, easier install too

Unless someone makes a setup where the ballast is somehow affixed to the bulb, what you are describing isn't possible. I'd be willing to bet what you've got isn't a true HID lamp, but one of those "xenon" replacement bulbs.

Can you post a picture and/or name and part number of the lamp you've got?

Harley do make these HID kits! I bought one and retro-fitted it to my old FLHS, but it came with all the correct wiring and connectors, prebuilt to fit a specific range of bikes.

Do you have any more info on it? i.e. part numbers and what not.

Thanks!

I've seen these in the P&A catalog. I think they only make them for the FLs and it's a whole new dual reflector lamp and everything. HID low-beam, and halogen high-beam.

This is mine:

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/membe...rn-lights.html

Its a genuine Harley kit, in their accessories catalogue. I don't have a number right by me, but it is easy to find!

The lower part is the main beam and is not very good. I have tried different bulbs with little improvement and have a 100w I must try soon. Dip is extremely bright, but has its down sides too! The beam is very wide, but does not give good ground coverage, so I do not recommend it.

I have high performance bulbs in my Buell and my wife's Dyna. They are easier to fit and far cheaper.

For those of you with the Sylvania SilverStars, what's the part/model number?

Should be the 9003 bulb. Just go into your neighborhood parts store and see if they carry the Sylvanias. If they do, it's the 9003, which is the stock bulb number. They make Silverstars and UltraSilverStars. I just priced one, and they are about 24 bucks.

actually this is a really good deal on two bulbs...

The other good thing about a higher performance replacement bulb, is that it is easily replaced just about anywhere you might be. Every part store carries them, if not the Osram/Sylvania, then some other H4 type bulb.

But hey, HIDs are cool...
