I know this is gonna sound weird but a non stock derby cover helped keep my leg cool at traffic stops. The stock one on the Street Bob would get hot as hell and my leg would be next to it or on it at stop lights. After putting the finned one from HD on it just gets warm. That is about the only place the heat would bother me and now it's gone. Someone else noticed the same thing after switching theirs out for that same finned one.
Other than that I have a PCIII on my bike and it seems to run fine and I don't notice any really significant heat coming off it.

Bought my FXD last spring and rode all summer through the South Florida heat. Idling in traffic, stoplights, etc. I never noticed the bike getting uncomfortably hot. I just had the 5K service done, I went to SYN3 at 1K. I sent a sample of the used oil off to a lab to have in analyzed. The engine is breaking in just fine, and the SYN3 was in great shape after 4K miles in one of the hottest climates in the country. [Ask the people who slam this product if they've ever had it analyzed] My bike is [mechanically] bone stock. No race tuner, no xieds, no slip-ons. Nothing. I've had zero problems, and the bike gets 45-55 MPG.
You are in New England so heat is not a big issue in that climate. Switch your engine to the HD Syn3 at about 100 miles. it is a GroupIII synthetic so you will still get a nice break in with it. ( all the CVO bikes come with Syn3 from the factory)At your 1000 mile service have your dealer use the syn3 again but put a synthetic 75w90 gear oil in the trans.
After the 1000 mile service get a set of the XIED's and install them yourself. If you decide to put them on sooner make sure you take them off before you go to the dealer or they may give you some crap about voiding your warranty.
