Question FXDF Saddle Bag Guards

Gentlemen

This is my first post so please be gentle ... Have been a long time lurker but only just registered . BTW, for any Harley owner this site is freakin' awesome!

Have recently traded up from an XL883C (which I loved ) to a black denim Fat Bob (which I really love! ).

Have done some basic mods to the bike - heated grips (a must over here), distressed leather saddle bags (to make the bike a bit more practical), SE heavy breather (looks cool) and sissy bar/ luggage rack (I know it looks godawful but gives additional luggage capacity for weekend trips, etc.).

Anyway my basic questions are:
(i) am thinking of putting engine guards on the bike (probably the gloss black ones) - are there any problems fitting these with forward controls and does anyone have any pictures of engine guards on a fat bob?
(ii) to balance the front and back of the bike I'd really like to fit saddlebag guards if I'm fitting engine guards. By saddlebag guards I mean the little bars in front of the saddle bags on the touring models - I don't mean saddle bag support brackets. Does anyone know if these are available (preferably from HD) and does anyone have any pics of such guards on their bike?

Thanks for your time

R.

Welcome! I asked about rear guards several months ago https://www.hdforums.com/forum/dyna-...ddlebag+guards and received no responses. I guess there are none available. Considering the price of decent saddlebags I would think guards would sell. I'd like to have a little insurance against a tip-over.

Hey hd7055 ,

Do you have a pic with your bike and the distressed leather bags mounted?

There are a few trips being planned this year where I will have to mount some bags to carry what I need but just can't find ones that I want on my fatty.

I was looking at the distressed leather or just going with the Kuryakyn throw-overs since they will only be on for longer trips and off between trips.

FatbobPharoe - Thanks for the link to the lindby site. The front guards are pretty cool but they don't seem to have the type of rear guard I'm looking for (in any event they only seem to fit touring and softail models - the fat bob exhaust doesn't look compatable with their product range). But thanks again for your time and posting the link.

BusyHunter - I'll try and post a pic over the next couple of days* with the bags on the bike (*probably the weekend before I get to it). Two comments I would make: (i) no matter what your dealer tells you you do not need a turn signal relocation kit to fit these bags (ii) while the bags can be taken on and off they are really more designed as a semi-permanent fixture - this doesn't bother me as I leave 'em on all the time but if you're looking for something to take on/off in a matter of minutes you may be better off looking elsewhere.

Oldbie - the search continues ... if I find anything I 'll let you know.

Regards

R

I have the black Lindby engine guard and it mounts with forward controls. Not sure about where to get the saddle bag guards.

I think that on the saddle bag guards issue, you will need to fabricate your own.

Yah, I ran into that with the detachable side plates. It took a whilethen he found somebody who had done it and confirmed it. It's one of the few times I was glad to read "Except for FXDF" with regards to a part. Man, does that phrase come up often.

Nah, not looking for fast on/off necessarily. If I go with rigid mount, they will be probably go on before a trip and probably only come off when I get some hair up my butt on a rainy day. Most likely that will happen about 30 minutes before I get a call to go on a weekend ride and need to meet up in 2 hours.

Just looking for ones that look good while they are on and those look good in the pics I have seen.

Don't see to many fat bobs around here, so it's a guessing game for the most part when I'm changing or adding something.
