Default Winter Paint project

So I decided to get another set of sheetmetal for my 08FXDC and try my hand at flames . I wanted to leave my original tins as they are so I picked up a damaged tank on ebay for 180.00 and a frt fender and rear fender for 110.00 .

Heres the tank so far

as I recieved it :

after I fixed it, and painted it black , cleared it and sanded it .and taped it

the body of the flames will be green

I'm going to outline the green flames with red and do the tips in yellow, I'll post more pics later.

Looking forward to seeing your completed project. I just bought a set of custom painted flamed tins. i am envious of your ability to do this yourself. Would love to have the facilities to try such a project myself. Hats off to you!

Thanks , its funny . the hardest part of the whole job is getting the top of the tank symetrical. I took a piece of white masking paper and made an etching and cut it out flipped it upside down and did it that way, the sides arent as critical because you cant see them both at the same time , but when you are in the seat , you sort of want the top pretty close .

I'll give credit where it is due, I got the color Idea from Attitudes samples , My green is a bit brighter than the Booth photo shows, but not as bright as the sample I'm using .

here is my inspiration :

I tried taping mine off and doing a jagged/ripped color transition from top to bottom on my tank but gave up after about three tries because I just wasn't good enough to get it symmetrical so I know what you're saying and admire your ingenuity. Really look forward to the seeing the end product.

A nice looking flame is hard to lay down...yours has a nice flow to it.

Nice work.

I have to be honest, I absolutely love a black bike with green flames! I'm sure that is going to look sweet!

Here is where it is at now, ( on my icy ,sandy, 20 degree driveway) , after shooting the green , I untaped it and put 2 coats of clear on it and baked it , then sanded it down with 1000. I'm having a friend freehand the outline, thats something I'll leave to a pro. Then I'll get it back and put 2 more coats of clear on it , sand it flat and buff the finished tank.

Man, is that going to be sweet. Good job on the flames, they flow real well. I thought I would hate moving up to KS from TX but the winter does give you time to do some serious work. Can't wait to see the whole thing back together.
