Default Motherwell rack on bob. Throwovers?

I just installed a motherwell rack on my street bob and was thinking of getting throwover bags for long trips. Anyone out there using this combo? What bags are you using?. Thanks. Linda

Hi Linda,

I have that set-up. Well, actually, I have all the parts which I just got this week. I'll be mounting the rack this weekend. The bags I have are Willie & Max compact slants (they're small). They fit perfectly between the shock and rear signal. I want to line the back of the yoke with some padding before I put them on. Once I get it all put together, I'll post a picture.

It doesn't look to me as if the Street Bob could handle a large saddlebag unless you move the rear turn signals. My plan is to supplement the small saddlebag storage with a roll bag on the luggage rack for longer trips.

Which motherwell rack did you get -- the 6" or 7"? How did the installation go? Easy?

Diane

diane,

suggestion: try feeding the yoke up thru/between the first two bars on one side of the rack and then down/thru the first two bars on the other side (assuming the yoke comes apart in the middle). result: part of the yoke rests on TOP of the rack w/no damage to the fender and the bars on the rack will help keep it from moving around. may or may not work, just a thought.

I actually had thought about doing that, but then decided against it. Aside from the looks factor, the way the Motherwell rack mounts by points on the center of the rack (versus on the sides of the rack to the side rails of the bike) seems like it would make it more vulnerable to any uneven weight distribution pulling one way or the other. Maybe I'm being over cautious. I don't know.

yeh, i thought that might be a problem. was only mentioning the setup because if it worked, it would be much easier to put on/take off the bags when you did/did not need them, while the rack remains intact...

I put on mine the Harley leather bags, and relocated the turn signals, also purchase a luggage rack from Drag that goes from seat to license plate

grape ape Got my Motherwell 7" yesterday went on in about 5 minutes.. The only thing I found odd was when mounting, dont just tighten the seat screw and then try tighten the rear screw.. my Motherwell seemed just slightly out of round with the fender, so you have to tighten it down with a couple turns at the front, then a couple turns at the rear, so on and so on.. This torques it down nicely.. They look great, and got my travel bag up off the fender
You'll enjoy,, now I have to take some new photos

It took about 12 mins. to put it on. Had to take the seat off, get the plug out of the fender and feel around under the fender to get the special screw hickie in. After that, just put the booger on and put the screws to it. Pretty easy. I have the 7 inch one. I will be posting pictures soon with my new seat etc...

Linda -- You had to take the seat off? [sm=confused06.gif] And does that plug just pop right out? I'll probably have no problem figuring this stuff out once I get to the task, but I'm by no means experienced mechanically, so I imagine these things to be harder than they really are.
