Default Uh Oh! What is this?

Hey guys,

Got home from work tonight and I noticed the bottom, front, right side of the engine was wet. I looked closer and saw that the wetness was coming from a cable mounted to the lower front right side of the engine. I've attached pictures.

I notice this thing is not screwed in all the way (you can see thread). SO, the questions are

1. What is this?
2. Should it be screwed in tight so there's no thread showing?
3. Is it normal to be leaking (looks like oil)?

Bike's a 2009 Superglide Custom with 760 dry, delicate, and carefully applied miles.

That's your oil pressure sending unit. No big deal if threads are showing, as long as there is no leaking. They typically screw in to a certain torque and then stop.

Edit: I just re-read your post and realized you said it was leaking a bit. If you have the manual, you can remove it, put some teflon tape on the threads and then screw it back in. Make sure you disconnect the wires first.

looks like an oil pressure switch to me. If so, then no it might not go in all the way and it depends on where its leaking. If its coming out of the plug then it is bad, replace it....if its coming from the threads you can remove it and try some teflon tape.

You will get some discoloration around the fitting with a silver engine on a new bike. Spray it off with a little brake clean and keep your eye on it to make sure its not really leaking. If it is unthread and put some teflon tape on it and rethread and you should be good to go!

Thanks guys - you're awesome. I'm not going to touch the thing - bike's 4 week's or so old, but you gave me the right words to use with the stealer. Taking the bike down there tomorrow at 4:30 after my kid goes to his other home, and they're going to try to get it replaced or whatever there and then - planning to go riding on Sunday.

Thanks HogCity - it's definitely leaking - long wide wet trail from the fitting all the way down to the bottom of the engine. No biggie - that's what warranties are for right

Your not alone, mine does nearly the same thing, not a full on leak but more of what the dealer told me Harley considers an acceptable weep. They fixed it with teflon tape, but it still does the same thing. I'll be going back soon...

Mine weeped as well when new ..... stopped after a while and I've left it alone.

I noticed the same...turns out the dealer overfilled my oil and it was dripping right on the sending unit from the breather. Check out your breather.
