Ejamacate me on compression release. Is it a valve that opens to ease cranking?
Yeah. The Screaming Eagle 110 comes with automatic compression releases located in the middle of the head. You can't see them because of their location and you don't have to do anything to operate them so most people don't even know they're there.
When you build a high compression engine, a machinist that does the heads will drill and tap a manual compression release in the head next to the spark plug. Before you start the bike, especially when it's already hot, you push the buttons on each compression release and it opens the combustion chamber for the first few compression strokes to allow the starter to spin the engine without too much pressure allowing the starter and other related components to live longer. They pop out when the engine starts, closing the chamber, automatically.
You would be better off having your heads flowed and replacing the springs if you use a cam with over 510 lift. My heads were also shaved a slight amount and my compression is about 9.75 to 1
Hogcity, thanks for the info. I was looking for minimal downtime since good everyday weather is right around the corner. I'd like to get the heads done locally but google just doesn't come up with anything. Maybe I should speak with my local indy. He may know someone in the Rockingham area. Would be nice to boost compression just a bit and get better flow especially since I got a set of cams and 2-1's on their way.
Also appreciate Sniper's suggestions. Thanks big man.
Have a look at the new SE Kompressor heads.........they are designed as a direct bolt-on for your 96"er. They bump your compression up around 10:1, have the beehive springs on em and are set up to allow up to a .580 cam. should fit the bill for what you want to do....I think they are about $600.....
