Default 21 inch hoop question

anyone know why a 21 wheel (even 40 spoke) for the 49mm fork is so expensive, and hard to find? Amircanmotor classics is the only one I see selling em - and its like $450 bucks!

Because of this, I figured I would just grab a wide glide or even a softail 21 40 spoke wheel and relace with my hub

Is there any reason NOT to do this? Also figure Id have a wide glide/softail hub to resell to help offset the powdercoating and relacing expense.

what am i missing here?

Yeah. I'd like to know too. Guess because they're newer. I need one too for a 49mm WG front end conversion I'm doing.

yep - planned to buy spokes and nips from buchanan - ebay sells complete wheel older year and softail models for ridiculous cheap compared to the magical 49mm - Im assuming the expense is the hub, but we already have one of those, right!

I am awaiting my spokes from Buchanan. I ordered them on Monday so hopefully they get here soon so I can get this thing laced up. I am using a wideglide wheel that I got off a member and a hub that I got off of ebay that way I can sell the wideglide hub and my stock wheel. This is by far the cheapest way to do this. Just look for someone selling a wheel and tire for around 100 bucks...buy the spokes and laced it up.

Most likely because they use a different size bearing due to the larger axles on the newer bikes. Anyone experiment with putting the newer style bearings in the old hub?

The 49mm forks have hollow axles (bigger diameter) and the hub spacing is a little different too, may need to purchase wheel spacers too

The spokes on the Wide Glide/Softail wheel won't work on your mid-glide hub. You can get the rim from J & P Cycles (and others) for $100, stainless Sportster spokes and stainless nipples for around a $100, then lace them to your hub.

sorry, i might not have been clear on my intent - only buying the complete wideglide/softail wheel to use the hoop - chucking spokes and nips since the whole assembly with tire can be found on ebay for right around $100. and reselling the wg/sftl hub (maybe with my 19 hoop?) to help offset a bitof the cost for below.

Will powder coat the 21 hoop and my hub and relace with new spokes from buchanen or other and figure ill have a powdercoated 21" wheel/tire for about $250 as opposed to the $450 Im seeing as only option in chrome (which is not what i want)
