I thought I should say hi. I have always been a fan of the wide glides for some reason, so this winter I spent alot of time lurking on this board and checking out all the different opinions on models. Long story short, I am a hair away from trading one of my current bikes in on a 99 wide glide that my local dealer has on the floor. My question for all of you is what should I look for, or be careful of (other than the dealer himself). The bike has 20,000 miles on it, always serviced, and has had the cam bearing recall taken care of, and one other recall fixed.
As for me, I live in Northern MN (looking at 13" of snow and still falling). I have ridden and owned pretty much all types of bikes. Sportbikes, cruisers, Goldwings, and dirtbikes. The two favorite bikes I have had are an 02 Kawi Meanstreak, and my 71 honda cb750 chop. My 71 is ugly and loud, and that is the way I like it. I look forward to hanging out here, so i hope it is ok if I pull up a lawn chair and stay awhile.
Anyway...I've got a '98 and love it. The '98 as you probably know was the last year with the EVO engine meaning the '99 was the first year of the TC engine (at least in the WG). You should try to talk with a few other '99 owners to see if they had any major issues. Is it carb'd or FI? No reason for me, someone else may have suggestions based on that though.
Welcome! I know with the TC88, around 20,000 miles is about the the the cam tensioners can go bad. If you hear any excessive noise from the top end, you want to have them check that out first.
Welcome Erik,
My advice is that while you are test riding it, listen with your ears and with your a$$. The bike will tell you if there's something wrong.
My 06 Wide Glide is my first and only Harley, but is by far the best bike I have owned. BTW, I live in SE Michigan, no snow here right now, but still cold.
