I want to take off the tranny cover, timing cover, tops of the headers and outer primary covers and powder coat them black. I know some of you on here have taken then off what are the difficulties and things to look out for ? New gaskets ect... timind cover worries me. I dont want to mess up the timing on the bike.
The timer cover on 88's doesn't cover anything but a ½" deep hole. Since they use an electronic ignition, it is only there for show. There is no fluid to escape or parts to spring out. Kinda funny actually.
I am talking about the whole thing, not just the little round piece. is that what you are talking about? If so I am gonna tear it off and start powder coating.
The covers on the twin cam engines are just that , covers. You shouldnt have any probs, Be aware of your torque values on reassembly also it may be necessary to remove your pipes.
what about the top of the headers, will I have to replace gaskets ? How fluid is in the primary. I suppose I should drain that before taking it off huh.

If you take off the headers you will need new crush gaskets (get the screaming eagle hi -preformance gaskets for better flow) The primary holds 1 qt of oil. You are best to get the Dyna service manual ($40 at Zanottis) before you start IMO.
If you're talking about the rocker covers and lower rocker housings, you will need to remove the gas tank. I would not recommend doing this job without a HD service manual. You will be removing rocker assemblies and push rods and re assembling these, although not difficult, will require a manual and some special adapters for torqueing down several fasteners that are in very tight spots near the frame.
Depending on which Dyna you have you should be prepared and a have the service manual for sure. When taking off the tank there is a cross over hose that needs to be removed and has one time clamps on it which you will need a special tool to be put it back factory stock. I went and bought a braided line to replace the stock rubber hose, it has washers that expand to keep the gas in. Another thought is to run the tank way down so that you are not trying to catch 5 gallons of gas or wiping it up off the floor. The word here is to plan before you start this removal job.
