All the Garmin GPS units run at 5Vdc 1a. The Zumo does the power conversion in the cradle (car or bike). With the Zumo, this made hardwiring for both the bike and truck quite easy. You'll need to check on the Nuvi and verify where the power conversion is done. I'd suggest a phone call to Garmin, or find a gps forum that can give you the answer. The guys at Powerlet make a cable with a built-in step down. I actually have one that allows me to charge and mini-usb 5V device with the SAE 2 prong plug. The one problem I see with a cig. lighter is that it's not wetherproof. Where as done right, direct wiring can survive the worst storm... even if the nuvi has to be tucked away to keep it from drowning.
It looks like the power plug itself is what does the stepdown. I ordered the extension cable and power plug on ebay. I guess I'll just run it into my bag. I'm not worried about weather really, the GPS will only be with me when I know I'll need it. I only ride in the rain if I happen to get caught, in 3 years, only rode twice in the rain.
Have a Garmin quest. Recently bought the hardwire kit , including the cradle from Garmin. Bike mount was from Leader and mounts to the controls. I put everything on the controls, left side, then routed the wires along the frame with everything else Ground went to ground on the fender, hot, fused side went to the brass terminal at the fuse block. This way it has power when the ignition is on instead of drawing from the battery. Works fine. works for me. oh yeah 03 lowrider
Anybody, Where is this SAE 2 pin on the bike that you connect to?
Some (most?) bikes come from the dealer with the sae 2 pigtail connected to the battery. It's the connection for the battery tender that stays on the bike. Mine was routed from the battery to the coil side of the bike.
Here's what I did after reading through this awesome forum.
Purchased the SAE To Cigarette Socket adapter from Powerlet Equipped, plugged my battery tender plug into it and placed it under the seat, then ran the wire up under the tank to the front. I built the bracket out of some metal from Home Depot and also picked up a longer bolt to go through the new bracket and tank. Painted it with a gloss black spray bomb. Used a Ram Mount setup to hold my Nuvi 660. Now I have maps and music. Works great and I don't think it looks to bad either.

That mount looks great. Even better then the ram mount I have mounted on my handlebars where your center cap is.
