Did Daytona to Charlotte (480) in just over 9 hours, stopping every 100 miles or so for a quick stretch. Stock seat w/ sheepskin pad from alaskaleather.com. Except for the bitter cold was very comfprtable. I'm running mid controls w/ highway pegs so it was good to move the legs around. A wimpshield would have been nice... Go for it!
I hear you guys about the windshield, I have the Windvest on my bike and it never comes off. I had a quick detach, and I couldn't go 20 miles with that thing on the buffeting was so bad. Windvest is excellent though.
My buddy just got his Road King last week, and I don't think he's done any major miles on any bike before, so I'm not totally sure he knows what he's in for. Then again neither do I, on the Dyna It's so comfy though so far that I don't think it'll be a big deal. Seems like the paperwork will be the hardest part, reading the website those guys seem pretty serious about checking up on you. I'm damn sure not going to ride all that way and not get my license plate frame though!
Me and a buddy did 784 miles in one day from my house to Virginia Beach. He had a road king and I had an 03 Superglide with a corbin seat and windshield. I would say 1,000 is easilly possible. We had about a 2 hour dinner at a pizza hut and stopped every 150 for gas.
Thanks for the input, keep it coming! I'll be sure to let you guys know how it goes, I'll be bringing a camera of course as well. It's gonna have to be soon too, because my buddy doesn't have a passport and that rule starts up June 1st, so he'd be SOL coming back across the border in Detroit!
I've done 2 iron butts on small bikes. One was a 500 Shadow. Other a Yam 650. Both times I did 2200 miles in 2 1/2 days, with 1 1000+ day. Neither bike had a windshield.
The most important thing for me was that both times I had a large duffle strapped to the passenger seat which acted as a backrest. I had hwy pegs on the Yam which was nice cause I could switch between rear, mid, and fwd pegs to keep my legs from cramping. The Shadow had no hwy pegs.
I didn't get credit for either time because I wasn't documenting the ride, just riding home from cali on leave. But I plan to do an official ironbutt on my Bob. My plan is to mount some mid pegs (keeping fwd controls) and a windshield, strap on a duffle and git 'er done.

Reason: camt spel
The wife and I went 650 miles in one day on a trip last Summer. We have a Dyna LR with QD windshield and the Sundowner seat. It took us about 12 hours. Seems like you can do it.
That looks like an awesome route. I will be heading up that way from Florida in late June. Maybe this time I will log my trip for the iron butt. I always get sidetracked though.
