Default Thinking about cam upgrade

I have a completely stock 07 FXDC with 25k miles, it has a K & N high flow kit and aftermarket Bub jug huggers dual exhaust and I am thinking about upgrading to beefier cams and push rods and lifters. I dont want to spend a lot of $$ but want more hp and mid range torque. What's the best combination and how hard is this to install. I'd like to do it myself but not sure if it's something that requires special tools or a trained mechanic.

This guy did an awesome write up. I think he's on this forum too. Hope it helps. Just go to the top and click on the "cam swaps". As for which cam, lots of info on this site to go through.

I added S&S 510 gear drive cams and make a huge improvement on my roadglide, with the S&S 510's you don't have to change the valve springs so they are a pretty simple install, plus you can get rid of that plastic cam chain tensioner..(mine broke once at 12k under warranty and again at 21k--which made me switch to the gear drive set up)

Post in the tech section for cam info. Over here it's all about handlebars, tassels or does this seat make my butt look big. I went with the Andrews 37H W/4deg.advance.

Does upgrading the cams really give an adequate performance boost if you don't do head work ?

Yes it does & well worth it, depends on what ya want if headwork will benefit your goal. For the question that started this thread, wanting more hp & mid range power any of the 510 lift cams will be a great set, for the most part they all have an intake close around 40 with short duration improving the midrange torque. Going gear drive is a personal opinion, my opinion is if your only doin cams to stay with the new style chain drive & take a look at the woods tw-6-6 cams...many other choices though!

I'd say Woods 6. You can use it in a bone stock motor and get great results. Then later, if you want to play with the heads a bit, and even go up to a 103", the Woods 6 will still work great. Just my opinion. Good luck!

The Woods TW6-6 is a great cam, it likes a little more compression than stock and the way to fix that is the 4 degree advanced sprocket, if you bump your comp later just change the sprocket back. The TW6-6 is a hot street cam, pick a cam for how you like to ride and you would not regret it.
