I tried the solo rack and didnt care for it. I didnt really want a sissy bar on it so I went unconventional. I had C&C build me a fast back with a backrest and use my drivers backrest to mount the bags to and the passenger seat as the rack.
I like it alot and the added comfort of the backrest is a plus. I have 3 different size bags I use depending on what I need to take.
My smallest bag I pretty much leave on all the time now. Once you get used to having somewhere to put stuff its harder to go without.
+1 on this the fast back is like a small padded rack
I finally got my C&C and love it.
Since this is a lot of personal preference going on here, If you ride 2 up a lot i would suggest the sissy bar rack, if solo then the solo rack. Function over form and such.
Personally i like the look of the solo rack, the sissy bar rack doesn't seem to flow right.
Detachable Solo Rack for me .easy on easy off. I just leave my bag fastened to it and take the whole rack off when I reach my destination.
It sounds to me like youre only considering the permanent black rack? I balked at the detachable only being in chrome at first, but I got over it. Its no big deal. I only use it for trips anyway.
Actually the solo I'm considering the most is a Motherwell...I have a hard time getting around the $199 price tag HD is asking for their chrome detachable even though it's what I'd prefer...the cheapest I think I've seen it was still $150+.
OK I can't let this thread slip by without knowing where Piginablanket is and why he hasn't commented yet. Maybe he has something up his sleeve for later. Rockon you had me cracking up after looking at the headline in your poll. I love when you military guys rip on each other, it's very entertaining!
i have a motherswell rack... never use it... just powdered it black the other day as well... i guess it is ok... takes 30 seconds to put on and off... when i need to bring stuff i toss that in her bags on her bike... ah ha ha
Bberk... your ride looks AMAZING!!!
I personally like the quick detach sissy bar with the rack. I ride 90% of the time without it and you dont even notice the mounting hardware. But when you go on those long rides and need a big t-bag or something the sissy bar with luggage rack is the only way to go!!
you might want to consider the new hd rigid mount rack. part #52796-09. I got it and love the design and looks. And if you need it you can add the detachable pillion and backrest for the wife. easy on and off and the rack stays.

+1 on the ridgid mount rack,
