The beauty of using a high heat rattle can to paint your exhaust is that when it does become a little worn, it's very cheap and easy to cover up what you don't want painted and lay down a new coat of fresh paint.
I've done my thunderheader this way. It will inevitably get beat up a little by the road debris being slung (sand, dirt, etc) at it at speed.
This is what mine looked like fresh after painting with hi-heat black bbq paint:
I did remove it for prep and painting (since I need to remove it for my cam swap several years back; figured that was a good time to do it).
