Question Oil Temp Sender

Hey guys, I was just wondering something and need your help. I am going to be putting an oil temp. gauge where the stock fuel gauge is and I am looking for a good place to put the sender. I could put it in the pan but I'm not a big fan of that. there are two plugs where you screw on the oil filter and i was thinking of using one of them. I don't want to get an oil cooler just to do this project because i know I don't need it. I just hate the stock fuel gauge and I think this would be a cool mod. Thanks...

Putting it in the ports or around the filter is on the 'pressure' side, which may be cooler. You also may run the risk of the sender not being 'wetted' all the time, giving you false readings. The pan would be the best place for it. All that being said, might be a cool mod indeed

I would add a "T" fitting to the hole where the oil pressure sender unit is and screw it into that.

What happens with a fitting like a tee, is that you don't have flow through it. You have stagnant (non moving) oil, which is fine for pressure, but your temp will not be spot on.

Although it might be better to have that, than have nothing at all.

I know a lot of guys that are running oil temp sensors are running oil coolers and i believe tap into the return from the cooler (down flow).

If i recall there is now a dip stick that works in the newer dynas that has a temp sensor built in... Not ideal but probably cheaper and easier...

If you put it in the oil pan... You will need an adapter, 3/8 M, NPT x 1/8 F, NPT or Napa # 3220 x 6 x 2... but not the drain plug but next to it.

Besides the Dyna, I have a touring bike with a 96". I put a temp sensor in the oil pan....works great. It gave me the info that I needed to decide about a oil cooler... don't need it. On hot days in stop and slow traffic, my oil temp rarely goes above 280 deg. F. I use Amsoil 20/50 and as with most synthetic oils, no harm is done to the oil in these temperature ranges.

Holy s**t you are ok with 280F? I would get nervous when my bike would get up to 230F.
