Fairly common problem. It's the gasket between the two.

It was a requirement in the AMF days.

On the TV show "How It's Made" they had the Twim-Cam HD motor being built. There was no gasket only a white Mister Gasket compound applied by a machine to one half of the cases between the motor and tranny. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

It's the metal to metal rubbing between the two cases leaving a smudgey substance. It's quite common and is most visible on the silver engines.

I completely agree with this & absolutely not a gasket there!

I just went through this and learned a thing or two. Mine was leaking at the rear of the rear jug, so I took a photo and posted it. Guys told me it was the seal between the cases, where there is no gasket, but a bonding compound applied during assembly. I took it into the dealership and they told me it was the interconnect gasket between the tranny and the motor. That IS a gasket, and is lower on the case. I told them I thought it was the seam between the cases, but they deferred to their experience and gave me the "yeah, we got it." A week later they called to say they had replaced my interconnect gasket and my bike was ready for pickup. One small detail they told me on the phone (dealer is 20 miles away) was that it was still leaking and they thought I should ride it for a while and see how it does. I told them "thanks, but no thanks." When they realized I was calling their bluff they agreed to tear it down and re-bond the two cases (much more involved than replacing the interconnect gasket). Another week, and they call to say the bike is done. It is sealing fine after 150 miles, but they left a rib of bonding material hanging outside the seam between the cases. They also said when they split it there was NO bonding material in that spot, just metal to metal. So I would make sure you know which of the two possibilities you are dealing with before you take it in. If it wasn't under warranty it would have cost me about $600 to split and re-bond the cases. If you are thinking about putting a cam or other mods in, they may do it for free if they have to take it all the way down. Here is a link to my original thread, with two pictures of the case:
