I tried a search, but "oil" and "leak" bring up a lot of stuff, and I am no Boolean Black Belt. I noticed an oil leak after I rode about 3 miles down to the store today. I have seen very light seepage here before, but not enough to tell where it was coming from. Today, after I shut it off and noticed it there were tiny air/oil bubbles coming from the vertical seam near the base of the cylinder. The end of the yellow line shows where I saw the bubbles. The bike is an '07 that I picked up new in Aug of '07, so it's still under warranty. I just wanted to know if anyone had an idea of the cause and possible nutroll I am in for. I checked my oil, and it has not dropped on the stick, and I don't have any marks on the floor. After cleaning the underside of the bike, I would say it is maybe 1/4 ounce. Thanks for any help.
That's where the two halves of the cases clamp together. I'd take it into the shop. It's on 07 so should still be covered by warranty. You've got a minor leak, but it is a leak.
Either its leaking from between the cases or possible the o ring on the bottom of the jug let go?
Which way does that o ring lay? It seems like it is leaking from the vertical seam between the two cases. It's still under warranty through July, but I want to know what is going on before I take it in. I have had some good and bad experiences at the dealerships before, and have no service experience with this one.
I think that is called a base gasket. One of Harley's common problems. I have a 96 EG that is weaping soon to be leaking. My mechanic told me it would be $750.00 to do both cylinders.
BB, the bubbling from that vertical mating surface.........
Only fix is to split the crankcases and reseal.
Major disassembly.
Mr. Puddle,
I just got off the phone with the service dept. at a nearby HD dealer, and he told me much the same. I need to find time to get it. Am I looking at any problems with the warranty because of the PCIII, Slip Ons, and Big Sucker? I know that a Stage I isn't the cause, but I would hate to eat this one because HD decides to stiff-arm me on the warranty. The tech said it would most likely not require parts, but just a re-bonding of that vertical seam.
I'm thinking that would be a stretch to blame the leaking on a tuner, different intake and pipes.... :| The dealer would have to prove all that caused the leaking, to not cover it under warranty.
