Default Forward controls install

Hi everyone. I recently bought a set of billet forward controls for my 97 FXDS-Conv. I have not yet installed them. I do not want to install the cap on my shift shaft, I prefer to remove the shifter for a cleaner look. My questions are:
1) Must the inner and outer primary be removed to do this, or just the outer?
2) What do you plug the hole in the back side of the inner primary with once the shaft is removed? I can't find a plug anywhere, and the "stealership" says that I need to "machine" a plug....I doubt this.
3) How the heck do I know what length shift rod to use??????
Thanks for any and all advice.

Owners of new '06 Dynas have had the same problem, they've either had to remove both inner and outer or cut/saw the shift shaft so that it clears the inside of the outer primary. You can then get a blank inspection cover for the outer primary. The only drawback to that approach is that if you ever wanted to go back to a set of mid controls (sale time, etc.) you are basically out of luck.

Good luck.

I just did this today on an FXDX. Unless you want to cut the shaft you will need to remove the inner primary to get the shaft out. If you find the right kind of supply house you may be able to find a plug or a compression plug that fits the hole. I didn't have any luck with the limited resources in my area so I tapped it for 1/2 pipe threads. It is a lttle loose but with silicon sealant I think it will hold just fine.
Good luck with yours.
