I've had to take my bike in 2 times in the past year with the same side of the fork leaking fluid. I was told at the shop that it's from debris "nicking" the seal. Others having this problem? Anyone know any type of preventative apparatus I can get that looks ok?
when you take out your seals just look over the down tube and the sleeve. make sure that there is nothing in there, also look at your dust boots and make sure they are in good shape. sounds to me like the seals where not put in right, if a ring of oil is not put on the seals prior to install they can leak... also if they are not propperly seated they will leak... unless you ride gravel every day something sounds like a bit of BS to me... fork boots will do well to protect that as well
If they were new and started leaking immediately, chances are they were not installed properly. As for the second time I would wonder if they realized they screwed up the 1st time and tried reusing the original replacement. Because of the spring tension they are only designed for 1 time down the tube. As Joe stated sound like some BS to me also. Next time you might want to do it yourself it is relatively easy. The best way I found to seat the bushing instead of buying the tool is using a piece of PVC pipe.
Ok, I'll keep those things in mind if this happens again, I picked it up last night and all seems to be well after a $136 bill. I def will not take it back to them again...I might be coming to you guys with questions on how to re-seat the seal myself if I see more leaking going on. Thanks for your replies!
