I just got my new wrinkle black cam cover in today. What can I expect when I pull the old one off? I would assume that's going to drain the oil out of the engine? I would also assume there's a gasket that I'll be needing to install the new one. Looks like I am going to need to remove the front pipe to get the job done.
With the bike on the stand, you won't lose much oil. You might lose 6oz or less. New gasket and your fine. Just torque to spec and use some blue loctite. Depending on what exhaust you have, you might need to remove it.
Did mine about a month ago. There was nothing behind mine. Why are you guys saying otherwise?
Are You saying that your cam case cover had no cam support plate or oil pump behind it? If you are referring to the timing or point cover then indeed you will find that the space behind it is empty. HD owners are pretty much traditionalist and making changes to the exterior of the engine is kind of frowned on. So, even though the newer bikes use an electronic ignition the MOCO still retains the look of the traditional by retaining the place that was occupied by the points. Now its only real purpose is to entice owners to install whatever accessory timing / points cover that strikes their fancy, which of course fattens the bottom line on accessories sold
The night before park the bike on something elevated like a piece of plywood to give the bike a more pronounced lean, this will help the cam cover drain the oilinto the cam chest. I cut down an an old allen wrench to fit behind the exhaust pipe to loosen a couple of bolts, now granted this was on a Dyna. See if that won't work for you before pulling the exhaust.
No need to drain the Oil .. Gasket will be fine, Just dry it good, There's minimal Pressure there ..You shouldn't need to pull the exhaust, the bottom right three just use a small Allen wrench by hand .. Easy Job
