Default Starting/Surging Problems

Good morning. 06 FXD35 only has 5700 miles and has always run well, except for throwing the IPB at 4400 miles. However, took it out the other day, and rather than turning about 2 times before starting, it probably turned 6 times. Also, noticed a very slight surge that I never noticed before (not sure if it is throttle position or rpm dependent) and the throttle now seems more abrupt right off of idle which is also something new. I admit I don't ride it much and I baby the heck out of it. Took it out yesterday though and wrung the snot out of it. No change in the starting though. Any ideas? Thanks.

I'd start with the basics. New spark plugs and maybe some fuel injector cleaner. Bet that would fix her up.

Mine acted like that, it was the fuel line inside the gas tank. The line chafe's inside the tank wearing a tiny hole in it. I had to replace the whole fuel pump assembly which the line is attached to, of course. It had 20,000 kms on it. Back 2 years ago, it was one piece, I don't know if that's changed now or not. OH, I have 2006 FXDLi, which I just had to replace the inner primary bearing also, at 40,000 kms. What's next!!! Hope that helps, just something to rule out for you.

grump, could be the injectors.

check that out.

dont remember exact number,
I think they were going to the 25 nozzles to cure surging issues.

Any codes??

Weren't the 8 degree fuel injector recalled and replaced with the 25 degree injectors. That is due to spray patterns causing engine idle concerns. Check with your dealer.

I had the same problem just recently, it ended up being the fuel line inside the tank. Here's a link to some helpful info.

Do you a power commander??? Have you washed your bike recently?

About a month and a half back I had a surging problem with my 07 WG. It was horrible. Turns out water had gotten into the connector that hooks the power commander inline with the ECM.

If thats the case, disconnect it and let it dry. Then pack it with dielectric grease and reassemble the connectors. The dielectric grease will allow a positive connection while keeping the connection essentially waterproof.

Also, many have had starting problems that stemmed from a loose connection at the battery. Simply remove the screws and apply a little blue loktite then reassemble.

This past Saturday my 07 WG was stalling out and would hardly idle. I was 2 miles from a dealer so I took it in and they said it was a leak in the line coming from the fuel pump. No sooner I got my bike back and road home, it was acting the same way again. I checked my V&H FP mode numbers and two changed so I reset it. During a 30min test ride I had a lot of rough idling and a few stalls. After I got home I rechecked my fuel pak numbers and they had changed again. I have since removed the fuel pak and the bike runs great. I called the dealership to talk about what happened and found out my bike was washed by them. I never let water get near the seat area when washing but I guess they do.
