Oil temp/level indicator
Has anyone heard whether the oil temp/level indicator that screws in in place of the filler cap works or is reliable. Due to the placement of my mufflers I cannot check the oil level when the oil is hot. This is a product H-D sells for 140.00 and I don't want to experiment for that price.
I heard the early models stopped functioning at high temperatures..... Which is the only time you actually need an oil thermometer! H-D said it was by design and expected behavior. Had to do with the LCD circuit board under the display getting too hot.
Last I checked was over a year ago. I don't know if they're making them any different these days. And by "different" I mean functional.
*edit* Just searched the H-D site and their product description now sates: "All LCD dipsticks now incorporate an updated and more heat resistant LCD electronic unit."
Hopefully some people here with newer units can chime in.

They use an LCD display and a watch battery for power. There's a button to push for the readout. Okay if you a sitting still with the bike on the jiffy. Can't read it while riding unless you want to run into something.

You had better check the fit if you decide to get one. I have a set of Pythons on my scooter and temp/oil dipstick head would not clear the rear cyclinder pipe. The head is significnat larger than the stock dipstick.
